I printed this out for my folder, but figured I should post it here too.
Bruegel Boogie Voogie – Misha Shengelia. Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno.
This exhibition of Misha Shengelia’s Royal Mail work, titled ‘Bruegel Boogie Voogie’ after a series of small paintings by Shengelia is a sardonic and incisive eye on cultural and political events throughout the world, as well as a look at the mundane everyday things in his life.
All of the paintings in this series are set out as canvas postcards, stamped and addressed, in gallery 5, which before the Mostyn expanded, was part of the Post Office next door. It seems that not only does Shengelia have a voice through his artworks, but he also appreciates the process of painting.
The works were set out in a sporadic fashion, it was impossible to take in everything from one piece of work because as soon as you set your eyes on one painting, another would catch your eye and drag it away before you had a chance to fully absorb the painting’s message.
Although I appreciated the works on display, they weren’t quite to my taste and the layout of the exhibition made it difficult to enjoy the works.
